SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 29—It’s no surprise that this is the busiest week of the year for mobile app downloads. But the apps mobile users are discussing most and sharing on Facebook® this holiday weekend showed real seasonal appeal, according to Mplayit, the first mobile app store on Facebook® that features apps from all three major smartphone marketplaces.
iPhone owners were apparently passing along to friends apps that help manage stress during the holidays or entertain themselves or children. As might be expected, BlackBerry users were more focused on sharing apps for work or travel. And Android users were out shopping, as three barcode reading apps landed in a list of the 10 most shared apps for the platform.
But a number of lesser known and more unique applications were driving surprising chatter and sharing in the social networking world. On the iPhone, Sony Music’s Holiday Yule Log found some seasonal sharing appeal. On BlackBerry, the Bible was among the most discussed and shared apps over this holiday weekend showing that the traditional Christmas message was certainly not lost on those users. Meanwhile on the Android platform, amidst barcode-scanning and price comparison apps, the innovative Google Goggles app showed how a camera phone can help with shopping and everything else in life.
On the mass market feature phones powered by Java, it was games, games and more games. Interestingly, Tiger Woods’ recent troubles had a positive impact on the mobile game that bears his name. It was the second most shared and discussed mobile Java app over the holiday period.
The shared list above is based on an analysis during the period between December 24-28 2009 on Mplayit’s iPhone Arcade, Android Arcade, BlackBerry Arcade, and Mobile Arcade on Facebook.
